Correct - Bomber Harris didn't get a peerage becasue even Churchill was shocked by the ferocity of the bombings against an advesary at the time who had been defeated in terms of air superiority at that moment. My dad was in the Royal Signals after SA and North Africa he ernt through Italy into Austria and Germany and was shocked at the devastation he saw. Victors get to write history doesn't mean it's the truth. After WW1, WW2 advanced and deepened the barbarity doesn't mean it was right. Somtimes you don't need to become evil to defeat evil.

More good news today. More Germans surrendering to the Anglo Americans than the Russians I am afraid. What they hope to gain by this refusal to admit they are defeated beats me. Possibly they are fighting the Russians because they only know life under them, or perhaps because they fear Russian reprisals. Many poor innocent people have suffered for our mistakes during the war, and one shudders to think why they have to bear the burden of our blundering. May that dreadful little man with his little appearance and little brain be made to pay for all the suffering he has caused. Good news this afternoon that it is unsafe to travel the road from our chalet into Florence after 9 o’clock. The same simple feeling who has taken over from the Germans seem to return to point that one freely cycles past only in Germany while fighting. After the day’s excitement we went to Florence to join the others who had gone to Florence against orders.

I stand behind my comments as I would not want to live in a defeated nation. The Japanese were fortunate that the U.S. sent Douglas MacArthur to govern Japan.

Yes, it was an atrocity which we have to live with , but it likely saved many more lives ending a war that a country started, and committed thousands of atrocities itself, against civilians and soldiers of many countries.

History has shown what some Japanese soldiers did to others who were surrendering, along with the prisoners who should have been treated as the Geneva Convention specified. This after they signed to abide by it. Along with the previous Hague Conventions.

Japan didn't surrender until that second bomb was dropped, hoping the US would lose much more. They lost more people before with the bombings of Tokyo and other cities than that first atomic bomb yet still didn't surrender until the second was dropped. They were willing to see hundreds of thousands of their own civilians die if there was an invasion of Japan, which , like some other countries do, shows little care for their own people.
