As many of you are already aware (and for those who are not, Thailand censors and bans certain books, magazines, movies, and other media, which are in some way considered derogatory to Thai "culture," threatening to those currently in politcal power, and/or offensive to the Monarchy or Bhuddhaism). One of the movies that has been on the list for a long time is the original Rogers & Hamerstein version of the musical "The King and I." I am not positive, but I think the book on which it is based by Anna Loweneses [sp] is also banned. The reasons being the depiction of King Mongkut (Rama 4), the king in "The King and I" is considered by some Thais to be historically inaccurate in some respects and also disrespectful to Rama 4 and the monarchy in general.

In any case, I was perusing the shelves of the CD Warehouse in Royal Garden in Pattaya and there the DVD was for sale, bold as brass!! TIT

The only time I've ever seen it was a few years ago on UBC (or whatever it was called before).

They sell it at half the dvd stalls in Silom, and as well as other tourist places around Thailand. The police don't care that people watch it at home, just don't try to set up a projector and show it in the town square or have it broadcast on tv.

Your numbers are a little out on the Royal Lineage there Jonnie.

And because the book & film are banned in Thailand - maybe best not discussed in an open public forum based in Thailand.

Discussions about monarchy are a very sensitive matter to Thais, and by experience, they often degenerate as they go along.

For those reasons, Thaivisa has decided not to allow topics along these lines.
