Bringing A Classical Guitar To Thailand

Featured Replies

I'm going to be staying in Phuket/Samui for 6 months, maybe more, and wanted to bring my classical

guitar with me. Its a professional make, cost a £1000, so I'm a bit concerned about the effect the heat

and humidity would have on it. Anyone out there with any similiar experience, advice?

I've had friends who's guitars have warped in the humidity here, I wouldn't bring it if I was you

I agree - don't bring it unless you can keep it in a mostly controlled environment. I bought a 'beater' Yamaha for ~ 4000 baht 4 years age and it's still holding up well.

Cheers for the info, those where the kinda responses i feared/expected.

its a bit of dilemma for me, I bought the guitar 10 years ago and it

was suppose to be my axe for life. Now I'm hopin to move to Thailand and

cant bring it with me!

I've read about Silica gel packs that help obsorb humidity, but it sounds like its the

dry heat that can do the worse damage. I've had it in Dubai for a few years, but that place

is saturated with reliable AC, so knew Thailand couldnt be comparable.

very frustrating :o

any professional classical musicians in LOS with miracle advice!?

I shipped a total of about 30 musical instruments over in our container Mandolins, fiddles, German archtop guitars from the 60's etc. all made it in great condition. My hydrometers indicate a humidity of 60-80% here in CM which is ideal for wood instruments. I also brought a norwegian hardanger fiddle over in my checked luggage with no problems from either customs or temperature extreams during the flight.

Cheers for that helitool, the flight I'm not really that worried about as I've taken it to the middle east a few times(it even stayed

in tune!). How long have you had your instruments out in Thailand for and would Chang Mai be considered cooler in climate to Phuket/Samui?

Its good to hear a positive angle but still my gut instinct is not to risk it.

Thanks for all that info . . . .

I'm also hoping to travel with a few musical bits and pieces:

Guitar, Accordion, Northumbrian Small pipes are of particular concern.

My wife doesn't seem to think I will be able to buy an accordion in CM Does anyone know any better?

David
