Pressure grows for cap on political donations after Reform cash surge

Featured Replies

Fresh demands for sweeping reforms to political funding are mounting after Reform UK received more than £5.4 million in major donations over a three-month period, reigniting concerns over the growing influence of wealthy donors in British politics.

MPs from across the political spectrum are preparing to push for tighter spending limits, donation caps and tougher rules on lobbying as Parliament debates changes to election law this week.

Funding Arms Race Sparks Reform Calls

Former Labour chair Dame Anneliese Dodds has warned that political fundraising has become an "arms race", arguing current rules allow ever-larger donations to drive campaign spending higher.

She is seeking to cut the national campaign spending limit by £10 million through an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, saying action is needed to rebuild public trust in politics before financial influence becomes even more entrenched.

Cross-Party Push for Tougher Rules

A separate report by the Autonomy Institute calls for a £20,000 cap on political donations, alongside a ban on MPs holding second jobs and restrictions on awarding public contracts to major political donors.

Labour MP Neil Duncan-Jordan said limiting donations would curb the influence of the wealthiest backers, while another amendment led by Stella Creasy proposes a £100,000 donation cap. Support for reform extends across Labour, Liberal Democrat and independent MPs.

Reform's Windfall Fuels Debate

The latest Electoral Commission figures show Reform UK received more than £5.4 million in large donations during the final quarter of last year. The total included a £3 million donation from crypto investor Christopher Harborne, who previously made a separate £5 million gift to Nigel Farage before the general election.

Over the same period, the Conservatives received £2.4 million in major donations, while Labour secured £1.9 million.

Trust in Politics Under Pressure

Campaigners argue the current system fuels public perceptions that wealthy individuals enjoy disproportionate political influence. Polling cited by reform advocates suggests most voters believe large donors use financial contributions to advance their own interests.

The Representation of the People Bill already proposes tighter safeguards against foreign political donations and expands the Electoral Commission's enforcement powers. MPs are now set to decide whether far broader restrictions on money in politics should follow.

UK party donations 'must be capped' after Reform's bank-busting £5.4m in just three months

Thought it was for Ferraris?

Perhaps the lower donation amounts to the Tories and Labour are an indication that few people are interested in supporting and donating to those parties anymore. Sounds like sour grapes to me...
