British First Passport For A Child from Thailand - Documents Required

Featured Replies

I'm applying for British First Passport for A Child (Born in Thailand) to a british father and a Thai mother (myself).

There are a few documents that I'm unsure and would like to ask anyone that was in the same situation and submit documents via VFS Thailand.

Both parents full birth certificates - For a thai mother birth certificate, Do I really need to include my birth certificate? My birth certificate is very old and in Thai. If it's really needed I'll get it translate to English.

Thank you in advance.

Yes, both birth certificates required and the Thai one needs translating into English.

That said, when I applied for my son's first UK passport, my wife couldn't produce her Lao birth certificate, as she never had one! HMPO accepted her Lao housebook, ID card and passport.

So, the Mothers Birth certificate isn't required ?

It's required. But an exception can be made if a birth certificate was never issued. At least that was the case for my wife.

I don't know if this will help, but this was my expereince over 20 years ago.

It involved two children.

The first was a boy, the son of my wife, whom I met when he was one year old and later adopted. This went through a long and slow bureaucratic procedure in the Thai system, but I was then able to present those documents through the British Consul, and he was granted Britich Citizenship.certificate of registration.jpg

I was then able to use this, in lieu of a British Birth Certificate, when applying for his passport.

The second was my daughter, born a couple of years later, with Thai Birth Certificate. I went and registered her birth with the British Consul, and was given a British Birth Certificate.

This was then used to get her British Passport. We then had the difficulty of leaving the country on a Foreign Passport which did not have an arrival stamp! We were headed into Cambodia for a holiday, and the IO at the border couldn't figure it out (never seen before) even though her UK passport stated Place of Birth: Bangkok. Delay while Bangkok was contacted for further instructions, but the all OK.

I can't speak for an adopted child, but in my case, there was no need register my son's birth with the British Consul or get a British birth certificate. I just applied for his UK passport soon after he was born, using a translation of his Thai birth certificate, my long-form birth certificate and his mother's Lao ID. The documents and application were submitted (and checked) by VFS in Bangkok, and we received his UK passport about 6 weeks later.
