Swedish diplomat's Thai ice cream review goes viral

The Swedish Embassy in Thailand has won over Thai social media users after First Secretary Emanuel Lundin sampled traditional coconut ice cream in Bangkok and shared his verdict online on 21 July.

Lundin praised the dessert's ultra-smooth consistency and sweet taste, saying it was particularly well suited to Thailand's hot weather. The embassy's post quickly went viral, with commenters warmly welcoming the diplomat's interest in a familiar local treat.

A 20-baht stop near BTS Nana

The embassy said Lundin's coconut ice cream came with traditional toppings including peanuts, palm seeds and sweetcorn. It recommended a vendor outside Two Pacific Place, near BTS Nana station, where a serving costs 20 baht.

Street-vendor carts are known for moving quickly through neighbourhoods, prompting a stream of jokes about the difficulty of catching one.

"A Swede is amazing for managing to flag down the ice cream cart. Even many Thais can't catch it in time," one user wrote.

Another asked: "Did you have to run after the cart, sir?"

A third commenter offered a more practical approach: "Why run? That's exhausting. I just follow it on my motorbike until I get my ice cream."

Pushcart ice cream gets the vote

Other users shared recommendations for favourite sellers. One wrote: "The only ice cream I love is Pai Thong. It's 25 baht a serving," describing it as an affordable dessert whose flavour is familiar to Thai people.

Some comments also made playful references to a recent controversy involving a well-known gelato brand in Thailand. One user posted: "Better eat it at minus seven degrees."

Another joked that a vendor could be called ahead for an order and that 40 baht bought a special serving that was filling, smooth and chewy, with "great bite". The commenter added that the only difficulties were ensuring the vendor heard the call and being fast enough to catch up, drawing a light-hearted comparison between the frozen desserts.

Despite the teasing, the overwhelming response was positive towards Lundin's willingness to try a Thai favourite. Many users said that, should he return to Thailand, traditional pushcart coconut ice cream ought to be high on his food list.
