Many years ago, I had a short stopover in Hawaii. I booked a half day tour for that same day, and a full day tour of the island for the next day. I had little previous contact with Americans in the UK. Suddenly that all changed when I found myself in the middle of small tour bus full of Americans. They all identified themselves by name, where they were from and what they did for work, etc. There was never a quiet moment amongst the constant dialogue and little chance to take in the tour. When I got off the bus, I went back to the travel agent and refunded my full day tour for the next day. That first half day was more than enough. I have since worked with many Americans, including in the USA. I have since found them to be friendly, knowledgeable/informed and always worth listening too. However, not sure that I would risk another bus tour like that one in Hawaii. BTW, when I worked in the USA (Tennessee), I had one visit to the doctor’s surgery (for a genital wart). I still remember the receptionist asking why I needed to see the doctor (I lied), but most of all - had I made a will and what was my 'net worth' – I lied again. Do they still do that? I found working in the USA was easy and positive/productive, with people focused on getting the job done – the ‘can do’ attitude. Like the opposite of the UK.
