Selangor support planned as Panasonic cuts 400 jobs

Selangor is preparing employment and retraining assistance for about 400 workers affected by Panasonic's decision to close television and audio production operations in the state.

Support package being prepared

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government expected to receive detailed information on the affected employees from the Social Security Organisation, known as Perkeso, and the Selangor Labour Department.

That information will be used to decide what assistance is needed. Options include placing workers with other manufacturing plants or industries and providing entrepreneurship training where appropriate.

The Selangor JobCare Carnival Tour will also be used to connect affected staff with new employment opportunities. The Labour Department will remain in contact with workers to address welfare concerns during the transition.

Production ending in stages

Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Sdn Bhd plans to stop television production from September. Production of Technics-branded Hi-Fi audio products is then scheduled to end in February 2027.

The closure is expected to affect 400 employees by the end of March 2027. Amirudin said the state was committed to ensuring that each worker received fair career-transition support while limiting the wider social and labour-market effects.

Panasonic Malaysia announced the planned closure in a statement on 28 July. The state government has not yet detailed individual compensation arrangements, which remain a matter for the company and relevant employment authorities.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

The factory closure does not create any immediate change to immigration, employment-pass or business rules for foreign residents. However, expatriates working in manufacturing may see increased competition for vacancies as experienced local workers seek new positions.

Foreign-owned manufacturers in Selangor may also find potential recruits through the JobCare programme and Labour Department referrals. Businesses considering affected workers should continue to follow Malaysian employment law and any applicable permit requirements.

The announcement is a reminder that industrial restructuring can affect local supply chains and communities even when a company continues other Malaysian operations. Workers seeking official guidance should use Perkeso, the Labour Department or the state JobCare platform rather than relying on unofficial recruitment approaches.
