I commute between Chiang Mai and Bangkok weekly and really missed the 556 bus. Happy to report that the NGV van service from the transportation center has picked up the route and will drop you off anywhere after it gets off the expressway at Phetchaburi road. It's 60 baht and far better than that truly absurd khao san "express"bus. (Probably not so useful if you have much baggage.)
