Thailand's national police chief has ordered an urgent investigation into allegations that a murder suspect in Chonburi worked for a police officer, collecting methamphetamine tablets and pursuing drug debts.

The inquiry concerns Thana Kerdthong, known as Pong, who has been accused in the killings of two Russian siblings and and a family of three, involving the five bodies being buried in Chonburi province.

Police were acting after claims that Pong had taken someone to collect drugs from a senior figure allegedly serving at Huay Yai Police Station in Chonburi. The allegations were aired by a victim during an appearance on the Hone Krasae television programme.

Phones to be examined

At 2pm on 3 August 2026, Pol Lt Gen Trairong Phewpan, deputy inspector-general and spokesman for the Royal Thai Police, said national police chief Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet had ordered a fast and thorough fact-finding investigation.

The Chonburi provincial police commander has been instructed to report the findings without delay.

Trairong said supervisors had also been ordered to urgently examine the mobile phone of the officer named in the allegations, in an effort to find supporting evidence.

"If the evidence is clear, legal proceedings must be taken in line with the law," Trairong said, adding that any other officers found to be involved would face equally firm action.

Disciplinary and criminal action promised

Kitrat has instructed relevant units to handle the matter carefully, fairly and directly. If an officer is found to have supported criminal activity or received benefits, the police chief said action would be taken under both disciplinary and criminal law, without exception.

Trairong said the Royal Thai Police would not protect corrupt or criminal officers. He said any progress supported by evidence would be reported to the police chief and the public.

The claims have not been established, and the investigation is intended to determine whether there is evidence connecting any police officer to Pong's alleged activities.

Not unusual... drugs or loan schemes are common within the force.

So let me get this straight the psycho-idiot criminals were suppose to do a simple police-orchestrated drug collection at 4.30 am. But because the person didn't show up they ended up murdering 2 young Russians for motorcycle parts. What f'ing mess!!! This incident has given people who beleive that Thailand is not a safe place to travel to all the amunition they need!

Poor Mr. Pong thinks something stinks in the police department but squealing won't save his bacon because he is on the hook for 5 murders and facing the hangman and who's gonna believe him anyway.? Even if it is true nothing will come out of it because the offending officer will either get an early send off or be transferred out.

I thought the police issued a written statement yesterday that this had been thoroughly investigated and there was absolutely no evidence of any connection with the police??????

If that's the case then poor Mr. Pong kicked up a stink but the odour was not strong enough and I bet the cops are stinking mad at him now.

Huai Yai police face review over alleged drug-runner link

Thailand's national police chief has ordered an investigation into past allegations involving an officer formerly attached to Huai Yai Police Station in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi.

The review follows claims by alleged victims of Mr Pong, a suspect in a case involving five murders, rape and threats, that he had acted as a drug runner for a Huai Yai police officer.

Speaking at Government House at 3.35pm on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, Pol Gen Kittirat Phanphet, the national police chief, said the matter was already being examined by the Chonburi Provincial Police commander and the Provincial Police Region 2 commander.

Retired officer named in allegation

Pol Gen Kittirat said the officer referred to in the allegations had retired from the police service in 2014.

He said he was not certain of the officer's final rank or position because the retirement had taken place many years ago.

The inquiry has been ordered retrospectively, meaning investigators will examine the alleged historical connection between Mr Pong and the former officer. The police chief did not provide further details of the claims or say how long the review would take.

Mr Pong the suspect in a case concerning five deaths and intimidation. The alleged victims who spoke out said he had been used as a drug courier by the Huai Yai officer, according to the police chief's remarks.

The Chonburi Provincial Police and Provincial Police Region 2 have been tasked with conducting the checks ordered by the national police chief.
