Reform UK conference exposes Farage’s new political problemNigel Farage once thrived on setting Britain’s political agenda. But Reform UK’s 2026 conference suggested the party is struggling to control the narrative as scrutiny, protests and a resurgent Labour government pile on the pressure. With Keir Starmer preparing to leave frontline politics, Reform has also lost the opponent who helped drive much of its rise. Polling has since tightened, with Reform now level with Labour after Andy Burnham’s strong start as Prime Minister. The conference was hijacked by controversy The biggest story was not Reform’s policy platform but a televised sting operation that dominated conversations at Birmingham’s NEC. The fallout overshadowed headline-grabbing plans, including a small boats agreement between Farage and French right-winger Jordan Bardella. Allegations from the programme have also been referred to police by Labour and the Liberal Democrats, leaving the controversy hanging over the party. Even before the broadcast, Reform was facing questions over Zia Yusuf’s inflammatory post about a Somali refugee selected as a Labour candidate. Robert Jenrick backed the sentiment, while Nadine Dorries condemned it as a “nasty tweet”. Protests exposed another pressure point The disruption was not confined to the party’s internal controversies. Farage’s Friday speech was interrupted repeatedly by protesters, while security problems allowed a protest banner to appear during Richard Tice’s address. One protester was reportedly involved in a confrontation with older male attendees, while threats of disruption delayed the conference programme. The scenes reinforced an impression of a party increasingly fighting battles on multiple fronts. Burnham emerges as the bigger political test Perhaps more revealing was what Reform struggled to say about Burnham. Farage attacked Labour over taxes, public ownership and “bigger government”, while blaming Labour “weakness” for renewed Argentine rhetoric over the Falklands. But the crowd appeared far less hostile towards the new Prime Minister than it had been towards Starmer. Lee Anderson’s opening remarks on Saturday were dominated by attacks on Starmer too — without mentioning Burnham once. For Reform, that may be the biggest warning of all: its old enemy is disappearing, while its new opponent is proving harder to turn into a political villain.
