Malaysia has said it will not proceed with the planned repatriation of 5,000 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar if their safety cannot be guaranteed.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed on Wednesday that the government is reviewing the plan, stressing that “Malaysia, as a responsible country, will not return the 5,000 Myanmar refugees if they would either be persecuted or their lives would be threatened.”

The announcement follows rising tensions in Malaysia, where Rohingya schools have been shut down and families evicted from homes in Penang. Many refugees gathered outside the UN refugee agency’s office in Kuala Lumpur last week seeking protection, with some briefly detained by authorities.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said the repatriation plan was prompted by friction with local communities. However, officials now insist that discussions with Myanmar’s junta must determine clear criteria before any move is implemented.

Human Rights Watch has urged Malaysia to abandon the plan entirely, warning that Rohingya refugees face persecution and violence in Myanmar. “The Malaysian government should show regional leadership in responding to the crisis in Myanmar rather than forcibly returning people who are the targets of the junta’s brutality,” said Bryony Lau, the organisation’s deputy Asia director.

The issue highlights the delicate balance Malaysia faces between domestic pressures and international obligations. For now, the government’s stance suggests caution, with refugee safety placed at the centre of decision-making.
