Homeless Norwegian Preparing to Return Home After 1,179-Day Visa Overstay

A 44-year-old Norwegian man is being prepared for his return home after Thai Immigration officers discovered that he had overstayed his visa by 1,179 days. Odd Stian Hesseberg had reportedly been living homeless around Pak Kret in Nonthaburi, searching through rubbish for food and sleeping at temple pavilions after saying his passport and other documents were stolen. Immigration records showed that he entered Thailand in March 2023 and was eventually granted permission to remain until May 16 of that year following an extension. Officers are proceeding with the case under Thai immigration law while coordinating with the Norwegian Embassy to arrange his return to Norway. Hesseberg thanked temple staff and local residents who helped him during his difficulties and said he was happy to finally be heading home after more than three years abroad.
