Chinese rider detained after Pattaya police station crash

A 19-year-old Chinese man was detained after a motorcycle stop outside Pattaya City Police Station ended with an attempt to ride away and a collision with a vehicle.

Police said the incident happened at about 8.30pm on August 11, 2026, while traffic officers were enforcing road rules and helping tourists cross the road outside the station. The rider was travelling with his girlfriend, according to an account of the case.

Police Lieutenant Siwakorn Somsura, deputy traffic inspector at Pattaya City Police Station, and other traffic officers reportedly saw two Chinese tourists on a motorcycle, registered in Chonburi.

Near-miss at a pedestrian crossing

Neither rider was wearing a helmet, police said. The motorcycle passed through a pedestrian crossing while tourists were crossing the road and narrowly avoided an accident.

Officers stopped the pair, asked to see the rider's driving licence and warned him to take greater care near zebra crossings, where pedestrians and tourists regularly cross.

During the check, the tourists allegedly became upset and argued with officers. Police said the rider then tried to leave the checkpoint but clipped a parked vehicle, damaging a police motorcycle.

Bystanders recorded video from the initial stop through the attempted departure and collision.

Conflicting accounts over incident

The motorcyclist claimed that police had attempted lock its wheel after the rider accused officers of assaulting him and demanding money. He then attempted to accelerate away, causing him to lose control and strike the motorcycle.

The rider had no driving licence or personal documents. Police said he would held in a cell overnight, pending an appearance at Pattaya Provincial Court the following day.

Police transferred the driver to investigators at Pattaya City Police Station. Preliminary allegations include riding without a helmet, driving without a licence and damaging property, with further legal proceedings to follow.
