Ukraine has officially stopped targeting oil tankers moving near the Russian port of Novorossiysk. The sudden change of strategy comes straight from the top of the American government.

The Financial Times cited by Money.pl reported that Kyiv paused the strikes following a direct request from US Vice President JD Vance. A secret agreement took shape over the summer.

President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly acknowledged the phone conversation. The Ukrainian leader noted that Vance made the initial call.

Protecting the pipeline

Washington stepped in to prevent a massive shock to global energy markets. American officials feared the ongoing drone campaign would severely disrupt the crucial transport of Kazakh oil.

That fuel moves through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal. The massive network operates as a joint venture between Russian, Kazakh, and global energy companies. A US administration representative confirmed the diplomatic push to the Financial Times.

The previous month showed exactly how much damage the flying weapons could inflict. A string of July raids caused oil shipments from the pipeline infrastructure to drop by a massive twenty percent.

Kazakhstan relies heavily on these exact trade routes to survive financially. Because of the summer attacks, the country saw its oil production drop by 14 percent in July compared to June.

Following the American request, Kyiv laid out a few strict conditions for the ceasefire.

Ukrainian commanders agreed to leave the pipeline infrastructure and certain tankers alone. However, the Financial Times noted that the ships must not carry Russian petroleum products or fall under existing sanctions.

While the oil tankers now have a safe pass, other facilities remain in the crosshairs. Early Wednesday morning, the Russian company Demetra-Holding announced that a fresh strike damaged its Novorossiysk grain terminal.

The massive agricultural hub took a serious hit. Anonymous sources told Reuters that the facility had “suspended operations” while crews assessed the destruction.
