I've noticed what feels like an uptick in repetitive, hostile, and bigoted posts here lately. Curious if others are seeing the same thing, or if this is just a loud minority making the whole place feel worse than it is ?

Same, it’s just that many of the same folks have multiple alts to reinforce their frail egos.

It has always been trolled, but the wise-guy section has grown along with the level of contempt people hold for others in general or anyone with a different opinion... but that is just an indicative reflection of how society everywhere now works and has polarized becoming more negative towards others. Best thing to do is to just say what you think and don't react much to any trolling, wise guy, or antagonistic posts as many fail to even understand the posts correct or infer any obvious messaging... just go off on one straight away.

I would lay the blame mostly at the door of the arrival of instant global communication, social media, the internet in general, and the dismantling of basic community everywhere and people, as a result of this, desperately trying to find some meaning and identity or validation in their isolated lives due to the enormity of it all. Many people are isolated and inevitably will struggle with mental issues due to limited real-time meaningful social interaction with others, or seeing the world in such a state and feeling helpless to change anything. I guess forums are an outlet for the steam that builds up and hiding behind a pseudonym and a keyboard tends to bring out the worst in people as there are little consequences to their release of frustration. It is often said that if you want to know what people are really like, go on the internet.

So, yes, it has changed, but so has everything else too and a forum will just manifest/reflect the current psycological trends and reality of the state of humanity in differing societies and situations... in all its sortcomings, as people channel their frustrations loudly to give them the idea that they are perhaps, in some small way, controling or influencing things as a coping mechanism. However, I not a shrink... just a wild guess that has crossed my mind once or twice.

Genuine post, I am curious about the period of time you feel this change has occurred in.

There are a few mentalists who like banging on, just avoid those threads, problem solved

I think most people could list about five or six posters who 'spoil things' ....................and we'd probably come up with the same five or six names names.

I get along well with right and left wing posters. Jews too. It's only the feminists you really need to watch out for. They ruin every thread too, a scourge in every sense of the word.

Most new members get hammered if they start a first thread so they don't return. Its the usual 3-4 members who diss them, ridicule them, and generally just disrupt the forum. Ther MO is wait for a thread with a good to get going then they join in with either pick apart there post so in the end you start to think they are correct and not you, or they deflect to kill the thread off.

There are several who do their part too, with a stitch here and there, while picking their insults with care. And how conveniently new nicknames seem to clean everything up and make everyone fresh and innocent again. 😅

Funny that, I find the forum has gone downhill as there are too many snowflakes who can't handle people disagreeing with them in a discussion forum - especially when they include links to back up what they say - and they flounce away and moan.

The forum used to be manlier.

A lot of people say things on a forum they would never say face to face. Online there is distance, anonymity and often very little immediate consequence, so some people feel free to be rude, abusive or deliberately provocative.

But there is also a responsibility on the wider community here.

Given the volume of posts made on ASEAN NOW, our moderation team cannot read every post in every topic. In many cases, we only become aware of problems when members report them.

So if you see abuse, baiting or personal attacks, report it. Do not ignore it and then complain later that nothing was done and the community is going "downhill".

If the wider community tolerates this behaviour, it becomes part of the culture.

Members need to help stamp it out, not become part of the problem by allowing it to continue or worse, getting sucked in to retaliating.
