Sudden Flash Flood Sweeps Tourists at Chiang Mai Waterfall

A rapidly developing flash flood at Mae Sa Waterfall in Chiang Mai swept away a tourist and injured several others as visitors were swimming in the area. Park officials noticed warning signs and began blowing whistles for people to leave the water, but the flood arrived so quickly that some tourists could not escape before the current reached them. Officials and nearby visitors managed to rescue everyone, with most people suffering only minor cuts and abrasions that were treated at the scene. One tourist who was carried away by the water later complained of pain and dizziness and was taken to hospital for further examination. Authorities subsequently installed red flags and ropes around the waterfall and reminded visitors to closely monitor weather conditions during Thailand’s rainy season.
