Minister rejects recycled mass-citizenship claims

Featured Replies

malaysia-citizenship-lead.jpgHome Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has again rejected claims that Malaysia granted citizenship en masse to foreign nationals, warning that recycled misinformation can fuel racial tension and damage confidence in public institutions.

Claims rejected

Saifuddin said allegations that 1.2 million Chinese nationals had been allowed to remain in Malaysia had been denied repeatedly with official data and explanations. Despite that, he said old videos, posters and narratives continued to circulate online.

He said the material was being recycled to confuse the public and stir hatred, even though the claims had already been corrected through official statements and reporting.

Check before sharing

The minister urged people to verify sensitive information with official sources before accepting or sharing it. He said defamatory claims could harm individuals and institutions, undermine public trust, disrupt public order and threaten national security.

He also called on users not to exploit sensitive issues for politics or social-media attention, saying responsible sharing was essential when questions of citizenship and race were involved
