Malaysia’s weather department has issued a warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in parts of Sarawak and Sabah, as well as throughout Labuan, until late Thursday morning.

Areas under warning

MetMalaysia said the warning covered Saratok in Betong; Sarikei; several districts in Mukah and Miri; Limbang; Belaga in Kapit; and Tatau in Bintulu. In Sabah, the affected areas included Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Membakut, Papar, Penampang, Putatan and Kota Kinabalu.

The department said the alert was issued at 8.50am and ran until 11am.

Heavy rain risk

MetMalaysia issues this type of warning when thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres an hour are imminent or expected to last for more than an hour. Residents were advised to monitor official forecasts and social-media updates.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

Visitors and residents in affected areas should build flexibility into morning travel, particularly for road journeys, ferries and outdoor plans. Heavy rain can quickly reduce visibility and cause localised flooding; check official updates before setting out.
