We sold our car to a dealer last month. He asked for copy of our insurance documents which I found odd. I canceled my insurance on the day after selling the car and received credit. Fast forward a month later we get a call from the dealer concerned that he’d tried to claim insurance on some minor work he’d had done on the car but insurance told him it’s cancelled. My wife was a bit worried telling me we shouldn’t have cancelled it. My explanation based on western way of doing this was that insurance is to protect us from damages not protecting next owner and claims have a negative effect on future policies. She’s on board with it but still Thainess face saving has her uncomfortable. She’s told them that the husband (owner) gone back overseas and can’t do much about it. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Bloody cheek trying to claim on insurance he hadn't paid for 😋

You no longer owned the vehicle and therefore had no financial interest in it, nor did you have any obligation to insure someone else's.

You did the correct thing when you cancelled the insurance.

Yeah but apparently not uncommon. Dealers do cosmetic work and claim on previous owners policy. I think some Thais think insurance goes with the car. We closed that loophole for sure😂😂😂

i made it clear to the buyer before the purchase was finalized that I would cancel the 1.class insurance after the sale ...

the buyer had to accept with this arrangement ...

When I sold my car a few months ago I cancelled the 1s class insurance a few days after selling it. Notified my insurance broker I wanted to cancel....the broker initiated the cancellation with the insurance company....about two weeks later I got a prorated rebate of annual premium paid. Only the 1st class insurance policy was cancelled. The govt compulsory insurance policy was left intact...that govt insurance policy was the only insurance doc provided the buyer on the day we transferred car ownership at the DLT.

The so called compulsory insurance stays with the car, as well as the tax label but my private insurance would finally be cancelled and renewed for my new car, totally state-of-the-art.

The middle men (con arts) don’t want to spend 1 baht for a car, don’t even mention an insurance coverage. “Smarties” middlemen want to take an advantage of sellers ins, if they are stupid enough to count it as an obligation (perhaps the dealer had done this to some others successfully). From the moment you sell a car you have no legal responsibility.

As long as the registration documents are transferred at the point of sale.
