Ukraine’s farmers are facing a brutal squeeze as fighting around the Black Sea chokes the route used to ship most of the country’s agricultural exports. With harvests piling up and alternative routes already under pressure, the renewed blockade threatens to hit farmers’ incomes just as they need cash to plant next year’s crops.

The harvest is coming — but the ships are not

Ukraine’s wheat, barley, sunflower and corn exports depend heavily on Black Sea routes, which have been repeatedly targeted by both sides. Kyiv has attacked Russian ports and shipping as part of its wider campaign against Moscow’s economic infrastructure, while Russia has intensified strikes on Odesa and other Ukrainian grain facilities.

The result is a dramatic slowdown in exports. Ukrainian grain shipments fell by around 75% year-on-year during the first two weeks of August, raising fears that farmers will be left with nowhere to sell or store their crops.

Farmers face a cash crisis

The timing could hardly be worse. August is the peak of the wheat harvest, while the corn harvest is due to begin next month, and farmers need revenue from this year’s crops to finance winter planting.

Oleh Nivievskyi of the Kyiv School of Economics warned that domestic grain prices have already fallen below production costs in some cases. Farmers could face the grim choice of selling at a loss, storing crops they cannot afford to hold, or leaving produce in the fields.

Storage is becoming the next battlefield

Ukraine’s agriculture ministry estimates the country could face a grain-storage shortfall of up to 11 million tonnes. Existing alternatives are struggling to compensate, with the Danube suffering from historically low water levels while its ports remain vulnerable to Russian attacks.

Railways cannot fill the gap either. Ukrainian authorities say more than 200 locomotives have been damaged this year, further restricting the movement of agricultural goods.

A deal is now harder to reach

Kyiv says it sought a Black Sea truce allowing civilian shipping to continue, but claims Moscow demanded an end to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

The standoff leaves Ukraine facing a dangerous economic squeeze. If farmers cannot turn this year’s harvest into the cash needed for the next planting season, the consequences could extend well beyond the current harvest — putting pressure on one of the country’s most important economic sectors.

your ports ...he had been under pressure from BRICS counties to keep the grain flowing before but no

longer..this also effects all other Ukrainian exports and imports too..anyway perhaps they won't be able to bring in the harvest due to no diesel.
