Malaysia boosts Thai border security after attacks

Malaysia has increased surveillance along its land border with Thailand after a series of coordinated attacks in Thailand’s southern provinces, while preparing to appoint new facilitators for peace talks.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said security was being tightened particularly across forested border areas, with the armed forces working to prevent insurgents from entering Malaysia or using it as a refuge.

Border surveillance stepped up

Malaysia said it would cooperate with Thai authorities to ensure violence linked to the long-running southern insurgency does not spill across the border.

The minister said the government would not allow any group rejecting the peace process or using violence to hide on Malaysian territory. The focus is on increased monitoring in areas where crossings can be more difficult to control.

New role in peace efforts

Malaysia also plans to appoint facilitators for talks between Thai authorities and insurgent groups. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to make the appointments after receiving candidate suggestions.

The previous facilitator, former National Security Council director-general Datuk Rabin Mohd Basir, has reached the end of his contract. Malaysia has played a continuing role because of its familiarity with the conflict and those involved.

Recent attacks raise concern

Several government buildings and vehicles were set alight in coordinated attacks across southern Thailand last weekend. Three people were injured, according to the report.

The conflict between the Thai government and Barisan Revolusi Nasional rebels has lasted for decades. Data from Deep South Watch puts the death toll at more than 7,000 people since 2004.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

For people living in or travelling through northern Malaysia, the announcement does not change ordinary cross-border travel rules. It does, however, underline the need to follow official travel advice and allow extra time near affected border areas if security checks are increased.

Malaysia’s response is aimed at preventing any expansion of violence while supporting a renewed peace process across the border.
