A Thai woman accused of killing her former husband, a U.S. diplomat, has been sentenced to one year in prison in Myanmar for immigration offences, though she may still face trial for murder.

The Kamayut Township Court in Yangon ruled on Tuesday that Pavinee Supasirivisan had violated immigration law, a charge carrying up to five years. She is being held at Insein Prison, notorious for its harsh conditions.

Her ex‑husband, identified by Western media as Daniel Paul Riva, 43, a U.S. State Department security officer, was found dead with stab wounds at the Sakura Residence & Hotel on 11 May.

The hotel, popular with diplomats and business travellers, lies close to the U.S. Embassy.

Police have opened a murder case, which under Myanmar law could bring a sentence of ten years to death. But it remains unclear whether Pavinee has been formally charged or whether the investigation is still active.

Officials have released few details, reflecting the tight control of information under Myanmar’s military government. The Thai Embassy in Yangon, police and the court have all declined to comment.

The case underscores the opaque justice system in Myanmar, where foreign nationals face severe penalties and trials unfold under military oversight. For Pavinee, the immigration conviction may be only the beginning of a far more serious prosecution.

On an unrelated note, I went to a 4th of July picnic years back, sponsored by the US Embassy in Bangkok. Actually met the Ambassador, shook his hand, thanked him and a minute or 2 of chitchat (nice guy). And, as it turns out, the hottest Thai women seem to go for Yanks. I was falling in lust every time I turned around. Lots of military looking haircuts in civilian garb. So I'm betting a lot more than one.
