Donald Trump may be reaching for a rather different weapon in his attempt to end the increasingly stubborn war with Iran.

According to reports from inside the White House, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is being given a more prominent role as Trump searches for a way out of a conflict that has now dragged on for six months.

And the comparison being used inside Trump's orbit is hard to miss.

“One is a sledgehammer, and the other is a scalpel.”

That was how one source described Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Bessent respectively, according to the Daily Mail.

From military force to economic pressure

The reported change comes as the administration increasingly turns towards economic warfare after months of military action failed to force Tehran into submission.

Bessent unveiled Washington's latest sanctions offensive this week, targeting Iran's financial networks and companies helping Tehran evade existing US restrictions.

The message from Washington is becoming increasingly clear: if bombs cannot bring Iran to the negotiating table, perhaps money can.

The shift has reportedly coincided with growing frustration inside the White House over the war and America's stockpile of critical munitions.

Trump is said to have become furious after being told that shortages of key defence weapons had been resolved, only to discover that the problem remained.

Trump needs a way out

The problem for Trump is that Iran has proved considerably harder to defeat than Washington expected.
