US forces have hit two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, a US official said, in what was described as the first known American strike on Iran in weeks.

According to CBS News, citing US Central Command spokesman Cdr Tim Hawkins, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) personnel were seen preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. The strike took place on Sunday.

First Known US Strikes Since Late July

The action marks the first known US strike on Iranian territory since late July, the official said. It comes after President Donald Trump paused a renewed US military campaign in late July.

Earlier this month, the US said it completed clearing mines from the main shipping lane in the strait, a route used by commercial vessels moving between the Middle East and global markets.

Larak Island And Strait Of Hormuz

Larak Island lies just offshore from Bandar Abbas and sits along the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for international shipping.

Iran has been directing tanker traffic to pass the island for checks and has reportedly required vessels to pay about $2m (£1.5m) to transit. During the current phase of conflict, Iran has also used the strait as a pressure point, with officials and state media presenting its actions as part of a broader effort to control maritime movement.

Iranian Claims And US Warnings

The IRGC said the attack on Sunday killed and wounded several people, adding that it would carry out “response and punishment”. Hossein Mohebbi, the IRGC spokesman, described the strike as a “strategic and fatal mistake” by Trump’s administration, saying the “enemy” would face consequences in both economic and military terms.

Tasnim news agency, affiliated with the IRGC, said the attack was carried out by drones. It reported that two people were killed and two others injured.

Trump said last week that all Iranian mines placed in the Strait of Hormuz had been detonated or removed. He warned that any ship or boat deploying new mines would be destroyed. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi described the claim as a propaganda “deception”.

Sanctions Push After Six Months Of Conflict

The strike comes as Iran faces renewed economic pressure following a fresh US sanctions campaign announced on 24 August. Washington said the measures were intended to further isolate Tehran and expand secondary sanctions against allies that continue to work with Iran.

Iranian officials and state media have largely dismissed the new campaign as a continuation of earlier US economic measures, arguing they followed a military failure by Washington during a recent conflict.

That wider confrontation began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February. Iran responded by attacking Israel, US bases and allied targets in the Gulf region, and the conflict effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic. The war has now passed the six-month mark.

Before the fighting began, around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas travelled through the strait.

Iran says it has launched missiles and drones at US bases in Jordan following an earlier US strike on Larak Island in southern Iran, in the first direct flare-up between the two sides since late July.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the operation, described as “Punishment of the Aggressor”, targeted the King Hussein and Al Azraq bases. The claim was reported by Iranian state-linked news agencies on Sunday.

Missiles Hit Jordan Bases

The IRGC said the combined attack hit installations at the two sites in Jordan, which it described as including technical and repair infrastructure and “fighter deployment sites”.

Jordan said it intercepted incoming missiles soon after the IRGC announcement. Its military said air defence systems intercepted eight missiles that breached the Kingdom’s airspace at dawn on Monday. No injuries were reported at either base.

The exchanges mark the latest escalation in a cycle of retaliatory strikes between Iran and the United States that has intensified alongside broader tensions in the region.

Drone Shootdown Claim Over Hormuz

On Monday, the IRGC also said it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian agencies, including Fars and Mehr, cited an IRGC statement saying air defences intercepted a long-range American MQ9 drone. They said the aircraft then fell into the Gulf.

Separately, the IRGC and other Iranian officials have previously said they are ready to respond to attacks on Iranian territory and to actions taken by the US and its partners.

Pezeshkian Warns Iran Will Not Back Down

President Masoud Pezeshkian made his first comments since the US attack on Larak Island as he left for Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, to attend the summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation heads of state.

He said Tehran was “not looking for war”, but that it would “never sit still in the face of any aggression” either.

Iran has said it will retaliate for Sunday’s US strike on Larak Island, which it had previously framed as part of a wider campaign of pressure.

US Denies Aggression, Cites Mine-Prevention

The US military denied that its Sunday actions amounted to an “act of aggression”.

US Central Command (Centcom) said on X that the US carried out “limited, precise action” to prevent Iranian forces from laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and blamed Iran for the attacks.

US and Iranian accounts also continued to reflect wider disputes over control of the waterway. In recent weeks, Washington has said the majority of oil shipments still transit the Strait of Hormuz under US military protection, while Iran has maintained the strait is effectively closed. Despite that disagreement, attacks on shipping in the area have been reported almost daily.

Tehran has previously responded to similar US strikes by launching missiles and drones at military bases in neighbouring countries hosting US troops.

Kharg Island Video Raises Fresh Questions

In parallel with the Jordan claims, President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform on Monday, apparently depicting an attack on Iran’s Kharg Island.

The footage shows an oil storage tank and an oil tanker exploding, as viewed from aircraft above. The post said: “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!! President DJT.”

There was no other evidence provided that the Iranian energy hub was under attack. Before the war began, Kharg Island handled the majority of Iran’s oil exports, and Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize or destroy it.

The US has signalled a shift from bombing to financial pressure, including threats of secondary sanctions. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has also said the US is prepared to use military force if necessary.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, on X dismissed reports that the US is successfully securing large volumes of Iranian oil through the strait, saying the effort was aimed at “gaming energy markets”.

Energy prices have remained elevated. The average US price for a gallon of petrol (3.8 litres) was above $4, compared with below $3 when the US and Israel launched the war on Iran in late February. Higher fuel costs, the original reporting said, could affect inflation and dent support for Trump’s Republican Party in the November midterm elections.

And how come Iran has stuck in Jordan? Wasn't all their military infrastructure obliterated, rebuilt, obliterated again about seventeen times in the last couple of months? And the war was won at least 24 times. It doesn't make sense.
