Would point out Northern France was part of England for quite a while.

And England spoke Middle English, Anglo-Norman French and Latin.

English, as we know it, became spoken after 1500 when the printing press standardised the language and pronounciation.

Before the Norman conquest (1066) England mainly spoke Old High German, Celtic, Latin and Old Norse.

Richard the Lionheart (circa 1100ad) would have spoken Old Occitan, Anglo-Norman French and Latin, but probably would have used Middle English (which we wouldn't understand) to speak to commoners.

He did not squirm, and he has not been "denied". The constituencies he has considered, do not necessarily want him. To be elected he has to have the local support. He wants a safe riding and there are people who have either been elected or who have been working in the constituency for years who can't be pushed aside.
