Four held after fleeing Malaysian pilot drug case

Malaysian NewsMalaysian police have detained six people in connection with a drug trafficking case involving a Malaysian co-pilot arrested in Indonesia, including four who had travelled to Thailand and Vietnam before returning home.

Six detained in Malaysia

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the six suspects were arrested between August 20 and 28. They are aged from 23 to 50 and are being held under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 while inquiries continue.

Police said four of the suspects left Malaysia after learning of the 39-year-old co-pilot’s arrest at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near Jakarta on July 28. Two travelled to Thailand and were arrested after returning by ferry through Kuah, Langkawi. Two others who went to Vietnam were detained at Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.

Investigation spans two countries

The remaining two suspects were arrested in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, and Klang, Selangor. Hussein said investigators expect to share some findings with the Indonesian National Police for further action.

Indonesian authorities said the co-pilot was stopped after arriving from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH727. Customs officers reportedly became suspicious during an X-ray scan and directed him to an inspection room after he collected his luggage.

A search allegedly found 14 packets containing 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing about 25kg, together with four grammes of methamphetamine. Indonesian police estimated the drugs at RM45 million and said the co-pilot had allegedly been promised RM50,000 to transport them to Jakarta.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

The case underlines the serious consequences of drug offences in Malaysia and neighbouring countries. Foreigners should be particularly cautious about carrying packages, luggage or items for others across borders, even when a request comes from a colleague or acquaintance. Airline crew, travellers and residents may face different investigative procedures once abroad, but cross-border police cooperation means an investigation can continue after someone returns to Malaysia.
