Relatives seek justice after Thai woman murdered in Taiwan

Relatives of a 35-year-old woman from Phimai district in Nakhon Ratchasima have appealed for official help after she was found dead in Taiwan, after contact with her stopped.

Local reports said Duangporn, known as "Jeans", had travelled to Taiwan without telling her family. Her body was reportedly concealed in a suitcase and freezer, after an alleged assault by a Taiwanese boyfriend.

Family were unaware she was in Taiwan

On the 21 September, Phimai district chief Siwasek Sintoram said the district had contacted the family and was working with provincial justice officials because a Thai national had died overseas.

He said the case concerned a criminal offence outside Thailand, meaning the embassy would need to coordinate with the family over possible legal action and claims for damages. The family would need to contact the Thai embassy to pursue their rights as victims and seek assistance.

Siwasek said provincial justice authorities would also assist the deceased woman's family in Thailand. Duangporn's parents had both died and she had been living with relatives in Phimai, with limited means.

Contact stopped on 2 September

A cousin said Duangporn was an only child and had mainly lived in Bangkok after returning to Thailand about a year ago. She had told relatives she was renting a condominium, believed to be in the Bangkok area, until 2027.

The cousin said Duangporn had previously worked abroad for 10 years and had previously lived with a South Korean boyfriend. She often travelled internationally and kept in regular touch, normally responding within two days and frequently updating social media.

However, she stopped communicating on 2 September. Her cousin tried calling and later asked people in South Korea to help locate her.

The South Korean boyfriend subsequently contacted the cousin's sister in Nakhon Pathom to ask whether Duangporn had returned to Thailand. He reportedly said he had not been in contact with her for about five days.

Relatives only learnt she was in Taiwan when a local official or village headman contacted them and urged them to prepare themselves. They had initially believed she was in South Korea.

Relatives seek ashes and belongings

The family said they were coordinating with authorities to bring Duangporn's ashes back to Thailand. They also want to recover belongings believed to be in Taiwan, including items of value, while other possessions may be in Bangkok.

Her cousin said Duangporn had saved gold, held cash and owned branded goods. The family intends to visit the Protection and Benefits for Thais Overseas Division at Bangkok's Chaeng Watthana Government Complex to ask about legal options and possible compensation from any suspect.
