Soon going to Liverpool for new passport. Leaving Thailand with re-entry permit on 1 year Retirement visa (Dec 15 finishes).

Can I obtain new passport and return to Thailand on present Passport which expires October 2027 but has remaining 2 months on visa?

Yes. You'll travel and enter on the new passport but they will use the reentry stamp in the old one.

To be clear your old passport is cancelled the moment you apply for the new one. But visa information in the old one remains valid.

The old one expires, the moment you get a new one.

I was told by my visa agent to enter on old passport and give the new and old passport to them to renew 1 year visa..

Does transferring old pp info into new pp get done at passport control counter or do I get sent into an office for background check?

You cannot enter on the old passport. But yes you must show both if you want to enter on the reentry permit. Normally you would then go to your local immigration office to get the stamps transferred and apply for your new extension in the new passport.

You will enter Thailand on new pp.

Present both passports to immigration at entry.

You will do transfer of stamps at immigration office where extension, reentry permit etc were issued.

Visas are not transferred. Details of the visa are noted in new pp

You can travel abroad with both pp, s

Point is the reentry permit takes up half a page.

You could ask that not to be transferred if not required

No he doesn't.

Like visas, passports are never cancelled, they become "expired" or "used", the information remains.

HMPO will flag a passport as "used" on receipt of an application for a new passport and, unless things have changed recently, applicants are told to keep the "used" passport safe.

Becomes unusable for international travel but some airlines allow domestic travel on a "used" passport.

Well I've got one. Admittedly a bit old but seems to go against the idea that passports are 'never' cancelled.

As already said.

Hand both your old and new passport to the Immigration officer. I always hand my passport open on the page of the Re-Entry Permit and say "Re-Entry".

He/She will then stamp you in, in your new passport.

After your entry, go to your Immmigration office and they will transfer your old passport stamps / re-entry / extensions to your new passport and then you can travel on your NEW passport alone from that date. A good idea on visit to your Immigration office is to do your TM30 as well, so you are settled as well for the online 90 day report from then one with your NEW PASSPORT NUMBER.

Just make sure you ask for your cancelled passport back, there's a section on the application form, otherwise the passport office will destroy it.
