While the relationship was undoubtedly filled with friction, newly declassified CIA docs from the Abbottabad raid reveal that Iranian intelligence did actively facilitate and assist alQaeda operatives when it served their interests against the USA.

According to a 19 page internal assessment released by the CIA, Iranian officials offered certain alQaeda members "money, arms, and training in Hezbollah camps in Lebanon" in exchange for targeting US interests in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, along with facilitating travel visas for operatives.

While they were never ideological allies, the docs show Iran was willing to act as a strategic facilitator when it benefited them.

Instead of welcoming the death of a Sunni radical who hated Shia Islam, Iran immediately spun the event into a political weapon to demand US military withdrawal from the region.

This shows that when it came to anti Western goals, groups like Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, and state actors of terror like Iran were willing to align their narratives around the most wanted terrorist in the history of the world.
