What began as a dramatic overnight security operation at one of America's most important UK airbases has now turned into a much bigger mystery — with British counter-terror police investigating whether a foreign state could be behind the incident.

THE STRANGE SCENE OUTSIDE FAIRFORD

The alarm was raised shortly after midnight on Sunday when a local farmer spotted three vans parked in an unusual formation near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, the airbase used by US forces for long-range operations, including missions connected with the war against Iran.

The woman told reporters that she saw a large group of men with covered faces and described more than five people running away when her vehicle approached. She immediately contacted police.

Armed officers arrived and arrested five British men from London, all in their 20s. Their three vans were subjected to an extensive examination involving police, military personnel and bomb-disposal experts. About 85 nearby homes were evacuated while the operation continued.

BUT THEN THE STORY TOOK A VERY ODD TURN

On Monday, British Counter Terrorism Police announced that all five suspects would be released on police bail.

They have not been charged, although they remain under investigation and are subject to stringent restrictions on their movements and contacts.

Police also said something potentially far more significant was being considered: whether the suspected activity could have been carried out by proxies or individuals knowingly or unknowingly working for a foreign state. Investigators are keeping an open mind rather than naming a culprit.

And despite the dramatic bomb scare, reports said investigators had not found viable explosives in the vehicles.

IRAN, RUSSIA OR SOMETHING ELSE?

Iran is inevitably in the spotlight because its Revolutionary Guards previously warned that bases used to launch US attacks against Iran could be legitimate targets.

But that does not establish an Iranian connection.

Police are examining several possibilities, including Iran, Russia and non-state militant groups, while Tehran has categorically denied involvement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has nevertheless said the incident appears to involve the "hands of a foreign actor", without identifying a country.

TRUMP'S CLAIM RAISES ANOTHER QUESTION

President Donald Trump has said the suspects had already been under investigation by US and British authorities and that officials had been watching them for some time.

Yet the immediate police intervention appears to have followed the far more mundane intervention of a local farmer spotting the vans and masked men and calling 999.

Her account is particularly striking. She said there were "definitely more than five" men and questioned whether others could still be at large. She also said she was disappointed that her calls to a local Ministry of Defence number and the 101 police line initially went unanswered.

THE BIGGER SECURITY PICTURE

That leaves British investigators with a series of unanswered questions.

Why were three vans there? Who were the men seen outside them? Why were they apparently heading towards an airbase being used by American forces against Iran? Were the five arrested men the entire group — or were others involved? And was this simply criminal activity, or was somebody else behind it?

For now, police are deliberately avoiding conclusions.

But RAF Fairford remains an important US military staging point, and the incident has already prompted heightened security around other US-linked RAF installations.

Five men may have walked out of custody on bail — but the mystery surrounding what brought them to Fairford in the first place is far from over.
