Mother & daughter found dead in Kanchanaburi flood

A 55-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter have been found dead after their pickup truck was swept off a road by strong floodwaters in Kanchanaburi's Thong Pha Phum district.

The vehicle was carried into a fast-flowing current on a road in Ban Huai Suea, Chalae subdistrict, at about 17:00 on 27 September. Two men were rescued, but the mother and daughter were swept away.

Search stopped because of dangerous conditions

Officials, rescue workers, national park staff and local residents searched the area until 22:00 that night before calling off the operation because of darkness and hazardous floodwaters.

The search resumed on 28 September, when teams set up a temporary command centre in the remote area. Phone and internet signals were unavailable at the location, adding to the difficulties for those involved in the operation.

At about 15:00, search teams found the girl's body beneath tree branches, around 300 metres from where the pickup had been swept away.

Bodies recovered three hours apart

The mother's body was discovered around three hours later, beneath a large branch about 10 metres from her daughter. Both bodies had been pinned under tree branches.

They were taken to Thong Pha Phum Hospital for examination before being returned to their family for religious rites early on 29 September.

The incident highlights the risks for anyone driving in rural Thailand during periods of heavy rain and flooding, including foreign residents, tourists and those travelling to remote national park areas.
