Sick Filipino Boxers Sneak Into Thailand

SICK FILIPINO BOXERS SNEAK INTO THAILAND

BANGKOK: -- Several Filipino boxers with records of medical problems , especially Hepatitis B, have sneaked into Thailand after they were stopped from fighting in the Philippines by the Games and Amusements Board, the government regulatory body for professional sports in the country. The revelation was made by respected World Boxing Council official and Bangkok Post columnist Edward Thangarajah, Sunday.

He said that instead of trying to cure themselves or find a solution to their problem, “the sick boxers have entered Thailand and are using managers and promoters who aren’t interested in the health of fighters but are only keen to make money.”

Thangarajah indicated that promoters and matchmakers like to use Filipino fighters “because they are readily available, they are cheap and it doesn’t cost much to fly them from Manila to Bangkok.” The columnist also pointed out that it was easy to provide hotel accommodation because Filipino boxers “don’t demand top-class hotels."

Thangarajah disclosed that the Philippines had informed the president of the Asian Boxing Council, police general Kovid Bhakdibhumi that several Filipino boxers had “secretly moved to Thailand and created a base to further their careers.” Gen. Kovid plans to take up the problem at the forthcoming 42nd WBC Convention to be held in Phuket while WBC president Jose Sulaiman wants an inquiry to be held into the number of ring deaths in Indonesia and the alleged “callous manner in which boxers are being treated” in that country.
