It seems the codes have finally been broken.

Anyone know if I can ship an iPhone to Thailand? Is customs going to stop it and tax me like crazy? I have friends in the U.S. who could buy it for me but they are not coming anytime soon so mail is the only option.

These guys were supposed to release the week after the hardware hack was announced. It was going to be $25, now the reseller in the US is charging $99. The European shop is charging $59.99.

The customs will be pretty expensive. Maybe cram it into a toaster and declare the toaster.

No it's FREE. FREE as in free beer.

If you are paying someone somewhere for an iPhone unlock, you are getting scammed.

The link above, and several more now on Engadget are for the free, open source version. Anyone can download this software and unlock their own iPhone with it. For free. Did I mention it's gratis? :o

The original group unlocking and selling their unlock scheme to people is going to be out of business as of tomorrow.

The open source unlock is currently a bit difficult, but hackers are working around the clock to package all the many steps involved into one sleek package that allows for a one-click unlock:

The cool thing about this is - it's not going to get shut down because no-one profits so no-one can be sued. As long as they don't profit they are not breaking the law. And it's going to be maintained. New locks that Apple may release in the following days will be cracked and added to the software very quickly. At long last, the iPhone is truly unlocked.

I'll keep the toaster in mind - not a bad idea at all :D

I take it you have never read much about the DMCA then.

Reverse engineering of encryption locks (and DRM etc etc etc) can certainly be illegal.

Yep. But there was a specific judgement in the U.S. on SIM unlocking that found that unlocking a SIM lock for personal use does not fall under the DMCA. The reasoning was that SIM lock is not used to protect any intellectual property but rather just for commercial ends - binding customers to a service provider. SIM unlocking does therefore not fall under the DMCA.

The judgement was rather narrow - it only covered unlocking one's personal phone. It didn't say anything either way about doing this for other people, or for profit. Nevertheless, unlocking one's own phone is perfectly legal.

It's hype crap anyway, just waIT for the new models of Nokia, Samsung, Sone Ericsson....Cheaper than the IPhone, more functionality....

More or less same refers to the Ipod....there are so many cheaper and better alternatives available, I still wonder why people pay the Apple premium?! Well Ipod and Iphone might be more "sexy" lol....(whatever that means ...).

Iphone's a flop. Why else would they discount it by a 1/3rd.

After the gullible circle jerking Apple fanboys got there fill noone else wanted the overpriced junk.

If one is being charged for a service, it is not necessarily a scam. You own statements above prove that for the non-technical person, paying a service fee is warranted in the case of unlocking an iPhone.

Maybe they want to sell more even though they sold 1M units in 73 days? Let's see they turned over US$ 500M in just over 2 months with a brand new product. Best flop ever, I'd say.

The iPhone is a pretty good smart phone. Not perfect, but pretty good. But thats enough to make it the by far best smart phone out there because the rest is crap. I've had two now, a Nokia which was very bad. And the flagship model by Sony Ericsson which was a lot worse. Constant crashing and the user interface was designed by monkeys on crack.

The Nokia was $500 new, the SE $800. Just to add some facts to the price debate :o

They're giving $100 credit toward anything in the Apple store after some backlash from the price cut. Anyone who had bought it in the 14 days prior to the price cut got a full refund of the difference. If someone had bought through the AT&T stores under a 30 day return policy also can get some kind of refund. I saw an article calling it the ipology.
