I haven't been to the Immigration offices at Chiangmai for a few years. When I went this time I noticed that there is a relatively new food concession behind the waiting area for the building on the right. There are also signs I don't recall seeing before next to the Immigration windows saying "Exact Change". The fee for the visa application I was applying for was 1,900 baht. I asked the gal at the food concession if she could break a one thousand baht bill which I held up and she smiled as she whisked the bill from my fingers. Her hands disappeared under the counter and then she handed me back five one hundred baht bills. When I said I had handed her a one thousand baht bill she smiled and pulled out a shallow cardboard box with a bunch of bills in it and stirring them up held up a five hundred baht bill and said: "Oh, no. See, I don't have any one thousand baht bills."

Mainly I feel like a fool because I know well enough to make such exchanges simultaneously in the open. Be warned.

Good idea when you want to break a large note or use to buy something of small value is to say neung pan, one thousand, when you hand it over and wait til they agree. They cant deny having been given it then.

Couldn't do it to everyone though as there would be a queue of pi55ed off westerners. Still a nasty scam and obviously a scam if correctly recounted.

That would be a good place to off load some fake notes.

Odds are, that girl is just hired staff probably on 200 ฿ a day. Believe me, she won't last long. It happens everywhere. Short-term thinking. She'll be sacked within the week.
