Mini Tsunami

Featured Replies

Not seen anything on Thai Visa but I phoned Thailand 10 minutes ago and was told there had been a 'mini tsunami' on the South coast of Thailand.

Wondering if anyone else had heard about it and if any problems caused?

Can't see anything on Thai TV or BangkokPost online, must have been a very mini tsunami, perhaps caused by someone jumping into the water?

The missis mentioned something she'd heard from one of her pals (in the UK), about panic on Phuket beaches. Later she said that a lot of people got scared when the tideline receded quicker than normal, but there was no big wave.

There was something on the news a few days ago about another earthquake south of Indonesia, no doubt it was associated with that.

Wednesday september 12 a major earthquake occurred in Indonesia, off the Sumatra coast. Due to the place where the earthquake took place, it could never have generated a tsunami in Thailand. Quite rightfully, Thai authorities did not issue a warning.

Foreign media though gave a tsunami warning for the whole Indian Ocean, and this made many people in low laying areas at the Andaman coast head for higher ground temporarily. There was no panic whatsoever though, and the next day it was only good for a very brief article in the Bangkok Post.

Aha. OK and thanks for that info. Must have been going on as I was leaving and I missed any information about the Quake.

I suppose it can easily be misinterpreted by people living a lot further North and with some added spice in the telling of a tale along the way a fast receding tide could well be embelished, especially if a few people panicked.
