Keep Your Gruby Hands Off My Language

Featured Replies

I work for various magazines and newspapers in Phuket, and I am becoming irritated with having to use American English for my articles. The language is called English and I am sick of the yanks making it up as they go along. Is this another way for the Americans to take over the world?

I thought the most common language in the USA was Spanish/Mexican and its about time they started using a Z instead of an S. I was always taught that Colour was something that makes up a rainbow and color was a folded piece of material at the top of a shirt. A sidewalk is something that you do on a pavement when drunk.

An American induvidual once explained to me that "English(usa style) is childs play and the more sophisticated human beings opt for real English" (not my words)

So, hands off our language - and the way things are working out, we will all be speaking Arabic soon anyway!

And by the way: Football is a game where players use their feet to kick a ball. It's no good inventing a sport where people use their hands and then name it after a sport that was invented 80 before. Most of the living world rightly call our game footballl, so stop trying to change everything. Soon you will be trying to coloni(z)e the world as well - oops, you are failing at that already.

Ps. I love American people, but stop trying to take what is rightfully ours.

I work in publishing too, and I took the decision last year to use American English for all our English language publications because of Thailand's use of the American 'billion' (one thousand million) as opposed to the British one (one million million). Right or wrong who knows, but at least we have constant style throughout.

Moderately funny (says the Moderator), but some Americans may not agree, and the topic is not really relevant to Thaivisa.

Yes, I am a killjoy at times.
