The straight answer is 'yes', however depending on the cover she requires maybe a travel policy would be better ?

Please drop  [email protected]  a line for information.

Almost certainly the insurance policy will have a clause regarding 'Residence' -

That is the polic will have a statement regarding 'Home Residence' where your wife is officially resident and to where all the Insurance Cover refers (also ususlly the law governing the insurance).

'Offficially Resident' has its own definition but when I have enquired (in three different countries) was defined as having an officially registered address, visa and registration with a local doctor.

Something to watch out for:

The rate of cover will depend on your wife's official residence - So for example when we took out travel insurance from the UK the insurance cover had a range of maximum payment values.

When we moved to Italy and bought travel insurance from the same insurance company the range of maximum payment values was far less.

I think you'll find that the Cover Values for insurance based in Thailand is going to be a fraction of that for policies based in the west.

Also - A number of western insurance companies offer a range of 'Traveller' or 'Backpacker' insurance policies that provide cover for travel to multiple countries over a protracted period - You don't need to be a traveller/backpacker to take these out and they do offer great value with substantial cover values.

Take a look at http://www.worldnomads.com/ (Which lets you select your home country - many insurance companies don't offer this as they are very nation specific).

where has she been living? As guesthouse says, pleas read the fine print on residency requirments!! Residency is the key factor, not nationality.

I agree with GuestHouse. I was trying to find travel insurance last week for TG trip to Australia next month. Most Austalian companies only cater for Australian citizens. I ended up taking out a policy with WorldNomads which was not only considerably cheaper than the policies from Australia but I think covers the major items to a reasonable level. $173 usd for 3 months.

I use to use them before I got 24/7 cover through work. Anyway I think the most important feature for any insurance is what is the company like at actually paying a claim.

For the record I put the same dates in for myself and it was $40 more. Strange...

Just a thought, why did you not take out travel insurance with a Thai company for less premium ?

I would like to see people with a vested intrest in the information/topic being discussed declare themselves as having such an iterest. (I don't think an Avtar/User name is enough of a declaration).

As for Thai based insurance policies - the ones I have looked at in the past offer very low cover values compared to those available internationally.

And if the 'Insured Person' is not officially resident in Thailand they may not even be eligible for insurance based in Thailand.

Personally would prefer an international company that has experience. eg Thai branch/ subsid of a good name. Generally less choice in Thailand tho' for insurance, particularly if you want cover for outside Thailand

Had a policy a while back under Royal Sun Alliance, which we bought here. It covered a wide range of things including medical costs overseas. Cost about THB 40k if I recall. Covered I think 90-180 days travel. AIG also do policies. I also had company insurance thru Allianz. It is important to highlight where you are normally based tho. Some policies also exclude US.

The short answer is becasue the thought never crossed my mind.

Having thought about it now though, I too would prefer an international based company. My thoughts may well be unfounded but I would not purchase insurance through a Thai based company for concern of a claim being paid out.
