Manila (dpa) - Former Malaysian deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday warned that democracy in most Asian countries is in various stages of decay and urged the people in the region to intensify the fight for freedom.

Anwar lamented that the sustained economic growth and political stability in Asian countries in the 1980s and 1990s have led people to complacency, "increasing the tendency of the powers that be to rob us of our liberties and undermine our constitutional foundations."

"We are looking at a report card on the state of democracy and freedom in Asia that is dismal and damning," he told the Second World Forum for Democratization in Asia Biennial Conference held in Manila.
