Hi All

On my hard drive I have a movie file and a subtitles .SRT file. I did a “goggle” and found that I could play the movie with the subtitles on the VLC player and that works fine.

My question is can I burn the movie with the subtitles onto a CD?

I have Nero 7 but that does not seem to have an option to add the .SRT file unless I am missing something. Is there any ‘Free” burner that will do the job for me?

Just in the interest of knowledge for its own sake, my “Googeling” informed that the .SRT file would play on Windows Media Player with the VobSub plug-in. Where is this plug-in to be found? Have tried the WMP site but nothing there.

Thanks in advance

SRT files are Text Files which you can open withy any Text-Editor like Notepad and so on.

You'll need Nero-Vision for to burn.

If you've a legit version of Nero 7.x you can download the latest 7.x Verion from Ne4ro Hompage which includes Nero Vison 4.x

FFdshow plugin will also show .srt subtitles in Windows Media Player. You might actually consider downloading K-light codec pack - it's got everything you will ever need for the Wimp. Or go with VLC.

The thing is, .srt subtitles are not parts of the video, they are separate files, if you want to make a video with "embedded" subtitles, you'll need to reencode it, which is a pain in the ass and is time consuming. Even if you get that Nero Vision thing, it will still take hours.

Or you can make a DVD where you can turn subtitles on or off. You'll need some DVD authoring program for that.

Here's a preview of what will happen if you go down "embedded way"

It IS complicated. Somewhat easier if you use Virtualdub and a Subtitler filter. If you've only got downloaded .avi files, it will be a breeze, but still takes time.

Thanks for your replies.

“Reimar” - I have a legit Nero7, came bundled with the burner, I have also downloaded the latest update from Nero and have Nero Vision 4.

Though everything works I can’t see any way to add .srt subtitles to the movie while burning.

I have Nero Vision 4 Essentials – don't know if this is the same as NV4

“Plus” – Have had a look at the links you provided and as you say it is a bit complicated. Have downloaded the suggested tools and ‘how to” pages and will have a go at it one day when I have the house to myself as I cant see it being possible with the usual house full of family. :o

Thank you’all

You can try DVDLab, of it doesn't have "subtitles", DVDLab PRO trial version. That way you'll get a DVD movie where you can turn subtitles on and off.

If your DVD player is DivX compatible then all you have to do is burn both files (with the same filename, only extension being different) as data on a CD.

Err! don't know if I’m DivX compatible - I don't think so

Here specs for my burner does not seem to show any DivX

Thanks

He meant your DVD player, a separate machine that is connected to a TV. Many DVD players can play movies in DivX or Xvid formats. Similar to VLC they look for subtitle in a file (on a CD or DVD) with the same name but .srt extension.

Look on the front panel where it says "VCD/SVCD/DVD/MPEG/ etc etc." If DivX is listed, you are lucky (assuming your original videos are in DivX, too).

Oops!!! :D

OK! get that now – no my player is not DivX compatible.

Just in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake the movie and .srt file are on the hard drive. Would I just have to burn them both onto a DVD as data? Nero won’t accept the .srt as a movie burn and I need to transcode the movie.

Having another look at the movie file I see it is “DVDrip.DivX.Ar” so it seems logically likely that if I could get both files onto a CD/DVD they would play on a DivX player.

But I don’t have one of those so it’s all hypothetical :o

Thanks :D

Edit:- PLUS and MARKWHITE will follow through on your hints too - Thanks

If your DVD player was DivX compatible (Pioneer is making good ones for less than 5000 THB) all you'd have to do would be to burn both files as data on a CD or DVD.

But as it's not the case, if u want to watch it on your DVD player you have to convert it 1st to DVD, SVCD or VCD format. Other have posted links to good software to do that.

Here's what you can do, step by step.

Download Txt2Sup

http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareTxt2Sup.html

This program will convert your .srt subtitles to .sup format that DVD will understand.

If your Nero can accept it when creating DVD, problem solved. If not, read on.

Convert your video to DVD format using avi2dvd or similar program. Ideally you should have one video stream and one audio stream but I don't know what exactly avi2dvd will produce.

Next, download Ifoedit from here:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/IfoEdit

It's the program that lets's you put together your DVD using video, audio and subtitle streams you've just created.

Select "Author New DVD" and it should be simple from there.

In the end you'll have a folder (call it "My movie" or anything) that contains AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and lots of various files inside them. You can burn these two folders straight to the DVD disk, any DVD player will play them.

Or you can skip avi2dvd conversion part and start with Nero and create your DVD without subtitles first, but use Nero's "Image burner" that saves .nrg disk image. You can "mount" this image using one of Nero tools, or, if not available, donwload Daemontools:

www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php

It will look as if you've got an extra hard drive with your AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders on it.

Now you can use Ifoedit to take them apart, add subtitles and put them back together again.

This might help:

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ifoedit-dvdauthor.htm

Scroll down to Step 4, you don't need the beginning part.

DVDLab I mentioned earlier would do exactly the same things all by itself, but their Pro version is not free and I'm not sure the free version accepts subtitle streams. It should, but if not, the Pro trial is 30 days - enough to learn how things work.

Basically there are two steps:

Convert .avi and .srt to DVD compatible video, audio and subtitle streams. Should be something like .m2v, .m2a and .sup files.

Convert these files into a DVD itself - VIDEO_TS folder with .ifo, .vob, .bup and whatever else inside.

Get a XVid/DivX player at Carrefour or Lotus. I bought a LG DK142 for THB 1,790 (regular price is THB 1,990 baht). It supports almost every format,

including mp3, wma, JPEG

Benefits over a regular DVD player:

- Burn XVid movies straight to a DVD without having to convert them to DVD format

- Around 5-6(!) movies will fit on a single DVD

- Easy to burn subtitle files ... just select them in the menu.

Only one disadvantage ... no resume. But is seems to have a marker/marker search system (Haven't tried that yet).

Does it read Thai subtitles? All players for computers read .srt subtitles only in Latin based languages.

But otherwise - it's the best solution. Making DVDs out of downloaded .avi files is time consuming even with the best software, and advantages are not obvious (unless you are into selling pirated stuff on sidewalks).

Thanks everybody for taking the time to answer my query really appreciate the trouble you have all gone to provide the information especially the step by step instructions. "Plus"

I have to go BKK next month (over 50 with child but no money visa renewal that only Sunbelt could obtain last year hope they can do it again) and will have a look at XVid/DivX players this would solve the problem and save a lot of burning. "Sniffdog"

I already have a list of goodies to buy at Phan Thip (I don’t get out much) so will have to be extra nice to the little lady so she will let me spend even more of my money. :o

I will play around with all the info so kindly provided as I like to find out how to work these things anyway. As someone said “The pursuit of knowledge for it’s own sake is not a bad thing” or something like that - well that’s me.

Thanks All

Went Lotus today, saw that they have DVD players which can play DivX (as stated before) with USB input, starting at 1500 THB for unknow brand, few hundreds more for decent stuff. You won't even have to burn to DVD, copy on a 1GB (or more if you want to put more than 1 movie) USB thumb drive will be good.
