Hi Everyone, I hope you can help me.

At the moment I live in Macau & my Thai girlfriend & our son stay with me for two months at a time, before going back to Thailand for visa reasons.

I'm considering going to the UK next year for two weeks so my girlfriend can see where I'm from. (I'm not that keen!!)

Could any of you please explain how I go about getting a visa for my girlfriend & will my son need one as he has my second name.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

My son's only 7 months old & has no UK passport yet as I'm living in Macau.

He got a Thai one so he could come here. I can always apply for his UK passport from Hong Kong I believe?

Your G/F must apply for a visitors visa at the British Visa Application Centre in the country where she is resident.

If your son only holds a Thai passport then he will need a Visa too and she should make a joint application. If he holds a British passport he will not need a Visa.

For details of your sponsorship requirements and to download the VAF1 forms you should check the UK VAC Bangkok and for hints, tips and other links use the search facility in this forum on the words 'visitor' or 'tourist' and check the route others have taken.

Briefly she will need to show

1) Between you you have funds for the trip

2) There is suitable and adequate accomodation for you all in UK

3) She has a compelling reason to return to her country of residence after the visit.

With regard to a British passport for your son, his qualification will depend upon whether you are British "otherwise than by descent" or not.

Perhaps the honorary consulate in Macao can be of assistance.

Scouse.

Yes Scouse, I am British by descent with both my parents born & raised there & grandparents etc....

I've written to the British Consulate in Honk Kong to see where I stand.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Yes, but are you British only by descent, or were you born in the UK as well (i.e. British by birth)? If you weren't, that affects your son's right to claim British nationality.

As Mr. Tourette has stated, if you are British by descent, your son will have not automatically acquired British citizenship at birth. Instead, you would have to make an application on his behalf for registration as a British citizen. Ideally, this should be done within a year of birth.

Scouse.
