Cabinet approves salary raise of state enterprises

The Cabinet meeting yesterday (October, 2nd) approved a 4%-salary raise of state enterprises, costing the government an estimated 3.6 billion baht a year. The Cabinet assigned the Ministry of Finance to outline a plan on the salary raise instead of the Ministry of Labour.

Government Deputy Spokesman Chotechai Suwannaporn (โชติชัย สุวรรณาภรณ์) reports that the Cabinet approved the 4% salary raise for state enterprise employees as requested by the Ministry of Labour and instructed the Ministry of Finance to adjust the salary rates of all state enterprises and government units in line with economic situation, employment, and inflation.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance speculates that the salary rate of state enterprises have been raised twice, totaling more than 20% during 2004 – 2006. However, it says state enterprises’ performance has not improved and they have faced a continuous loss of profits during 2004 – 2006 due to expenses for the employees.

Sure, makes sense to me. If you can vote yourself a salary raise, why not? ...particularly if the raise is predicated on results of endeavors while in office. I think the reasoning goes something like this: "the less you accomplish, the more you're worth."

In my two horse town of Chiang Rai, we've got a Land Department that has supposedly been trying to get chanod (title) for some of the thousands of parcels that are spitting distance from downtown. They just can't swing it. Months and years roll by, and the dozens of busy-looking land department personnel just can't figure out how to designate chanod - they appear to be totally stymied.

Perhaps they should get salary increases also.

I think you are missing the point on this one.

State Owned Enterprises are the government monopolies and enterprises which provide goods and services. Companies like Thai Tabacco monopoly, TOT, CAT, State rail authortiy, water works, to little minnows like the Zoo, Rubber monopoly etc etc.

Given that salaries for state enterprise employees ranger from a starting salary of 6,000 baht to a upper end salary of 20K to 30K after 25 years of service, this isn't a pay rise for the politicans themseves, rather the people who work for them.
