these downpours can be very wierd. You can get torrential rain in one part and not 500m away, its dry as a bone :D

in open areas you can see this activity under black clouds

. At least we are not in the States. peeple who have never been there or are not from the tornado belt have no idea how fierce their weather can be :o

ive never seen anything that bad in LOS, but as for eastern phillipines WOW, 20 serious hits per year average.

I do have to say the Mekong does seem particularly high this year. Don Chan (the island not the hotel) which is normally visable (even just the by a tiny bit) is completely submerged.

Quite amusing that the wildlife folks were saying the mekong is low - and were concerned about environment changes earlier this year - funnily enough in the dry season! :o

I wouldn't like to know this was heading my way!

Update:

Isan provinces on alert of Lekima

Tropical storm "Lekima" cut the road to Ban Thung Kliang in Ubon Ratchathani's Natal district on Thursday, while 16 northeastern provinces were warned of heavy rains, gusting winds and possible flash floods.

Lekima has brought heavy downpours to the region since Tuesday night causing the Mekong River to rise.

Ban Thung Kliang farmer Somsri Thongon reported that a threekilometre portion of the road and a nearby weir were damaged by flooding.

Natal district chief Mahannop Kanjanawijit said he had instructed officials to assess the damage to monitor water levels in the Mekong, which was rising dangerously, and had already flooded some local farms. Mahannop said his district officials would provide assistance in moving people's belongings to higher grounds in case of evacuation.

Nakhon Panom Governor Boonsanong Boonmee warned residents in Muang Nakhon Phanom, Na Kae, Si Songkhram, Na Thom, Ban Phaeng, Tha Uthen, and That Phanom districts of flash floods and high winds.

The province was already soaked by heavy rains disrupting transport, while lowlying homes and roads were flooded. Gusting winds had also damaged three billboards.

In Roi Et, the storm caused flooding in Muang Municipality yesterday (thurs) leaving many city rods under 40 centimetres of water. Roi Et Governor Pinij Pichayakal ordered officials to inspect risky areas along the Chi and Yung rivers to warn people about possible floods and to prepare for evacuation.

Earlier, weather forecaster Oranuch Thongsri at the Northeastern Meteorology Centre warned that the storm, now centred in Nong Khai province, was moving westwards at 10 km/hr and would be downgraded to a depression late yesterday.

Heavy rains were expected in many areas including Loei, Nong Khai, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakol Nakhon, Nakhon Panom, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Amnat Charoen and Ubol Ratchathani.

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Region 6 chief Chaipan Homwisetwongsa said he had dispatched officials to pump water from some areas and to organise flatbottom boats and dried food to be ready around the clock to tackle potential problems.

As Loei, Nong Khai and Nong Bua Lamphu had mountainous areas prone to forest runoffs and landslides, he had instructed officials to monitor the situation in their jurisdiction and check if the disaster warning system in the area were working properly.

Flood-hit Northeastern province declares disaster zones

AMNAT CHAROEN: -- Thailand's northeastern province of Amnat Charoen declared four districts as disaster areas after thousands acres of farmland were flooded.

The governor said local officials are monitoring the situation closely, particularly in Chanuman district, where the water level of the Mekong River is measured at 5.6 metres. If the water level reaches eight metres, it is considered the crisis level.

In the northern province of Mae Hong Son, a flash flood triggered by heavy rain increased run-off, which damaged a bridge on a road linking Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces.

Motorists are warned of possible landslides in Mae Hong Son's mountains.

In the lower north province of Phitsanulok, heavy rain prompted local residents in a village Noen Maprang district to move their belongings and animals to higher ground after they received a warning from surveillance volunteers.

About 100 soldiers from the third army region command have helped flood-hit villagers. Flash flooding affected about 2,000 households and three schools, which are under two metres of water.

An official from the local disaster prevention and mitigation office said volunteers distributed relief supplies to people in some villages by flat-bottomed boats as the Phisanulok-Noen Maprang road was cut off.

In the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, the overflowing Chi River has flooded about 70 houses in Waeng Yai district. The chief district ordered local officials to assist affected residents.

Khon Kaen governor Panchai Bovornrattanapran ordered officials in 26 districts to closely monitor possible flash flood in at-risk areas.

Meanwhile, in the capital city of Bangkok, Sanya Cheenimitr, deputy director of Drainage and Sewerage Department of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said the tropical depression Lekima had been downgraded to low pressure cell status and did not much affect the metropolitan area as it passed through Thailand's north and northeast provinces.

The record of Friday morning rainfall was measured at only 20 millimetres, with lingering rain in the eastern part of Bangkok while the inner city area, it might not rain at all.

Mr. Sanya said the BMA, however, would monitor the record of rainfall closely and locate pumps in frequently flooded areas to promptly drain the water accumulating from the relentless heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Thai Meteorological Department announced a warning of heavy downpours in the northern provinces of Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Sukhothai while the people in northeastern provinces including Loei,Chaiyaphum and Nakhon Ratchasima should beware of possible flash flood and forest run-offs.

All shipping is advised to proceed with extreme caution and small boats to remain in port as heavy waves remain over Andaman Sea and the upper part of Thailand for a few days.

Our place is on the western edge of Phetchabun province close to Phichit province. My girl tells me the rains and floods have been pretty bad. Her cousin's truck got washed away. Some relatives' houses have been severely damaged or destroyed and they are staying at our place. Our house is about a meter above the rest of the area, but she said there was still a lot of water around. I'm anxiously awaiting for her brother to email some pictures to me, and hoping that the damage to our place is minimal.
