Jackpot winner picks up prize

BANGKOK: -- The man who won Monday's Bt57.5-million lottery jackpot picked up his cheque from the Government Lottery Office yesterday and told officials that he did not want media publicity, a senior GLO official said.

"The winner claimed his reward today and told the officials who handled the procedure that he would not talk to the media," said GLO Deputy Director Surasit Sangkhapong.

However, Hoom Yuma, 86, a resident of Sukhothai's Muang district, yesterday said his son Jamnan Yuma, 41, had called him to say he had won the jackpot.

The ticket was bought from a vendor on Soi Lat Phrao 41 in Bangkok. The vendor, Supaporn Nawanuch, 43, has already received her 10-per-cent award - Bt575,000 - from the GLO.

Hoom said his son was a foreman in Bangkok and visited his Sukhothai home "once in a while".

He said Jamnan told him that he would spend the money on treating his brother, Jon Yuma, 59, for Parkinson's disease.

Hoom said Jamnan was the ninth of his 10 children.

Wonder what he's going to do with the remaining 57,499,970 baht (after deducting the 30 baht for his brother's Parkinson's treatment)?

Plenty of lottery stories here in the US, where it has become a big scheme by state governments to raise money. So much the better for me personally because the money has to come from somewhere - - - - One state estimates by starting a new lottery they can reduce personal property taxes by 20%.

It takes a strong person to win the lottery and not be destroyed by it. :o

Indeed - did no one else notice that 10% would be 5.75Mil.

That's why I buy the BKK Post and not The Nation. They really do seem to be a bunch of plums working on that rag!
