Moving To Thialand

Hi all ..

i'm moving to thailand mid november , everything already arranged , and have begun clearing my UK belongings .

however some items if sold 2nd hand then replaced new in LOS will cost me more when copmaring the loss of value and sale and replacemnt price ..

where do i stand from a customs/import duty point of view bringing in larger items from the UK ?

eg . 42" LCD tv , cost me £1200 in the UK, if i sell 2nd hand will only get £500 . and still 80,000 baht for the same model in LOS.

so lose £700

but i can pack it carefully and just about scrape it on a gold teir emirates luggage allowance

i do NOT still have the original receipt, and it will be about 6 months old at time of travel

Bringing a TV from UK to Thailand is a waste of time if you want to watch Thai terrestial TV. Whilst Thailands voltage is the same and they use the PAL system the vision and sound carrier band separation is different so you will have to choose whether you receive sound or picture (not both). Also Thailand still transmits some channels in VHF and I doubt your set will have a VHF tuner.

If you only intend to watch DVD's or use it as a monitor for other transmissions it should be OK.

There is another issue to consider.

TV's receive two signals: A picture signal and a sound signal - these are each allocated a different frequence for every chanel.

The problem is that Thailand uses a different set of frequencies than does the UK.

What this means is when you take a UK TV to Thailand and try to tune it in you will either get a good picture and no sound or if you tune in to get the sound you'll loose the picture.

The cure is to have the circuit adjusted by a TV technician (I've done this with a TV going from Thailand to the UK but not in the other directiion).

I'd sell the TV if I were you and buy again when you've settled in Thailand.

Actually, an LCD will probably work on terrestrial anyway, they tend to be multi-standard. We have UK standard Tatung 32" it actually came from HomePro but the default channel names are BBC1, BBC2, ITV & CH4 Manual is in Chinese and English, works just fine.

I'd be more concerned about it getting damaged even in it's original packaging and it will be 'oversize' for the baggage handling system.

You will almost certainly get pulled at customs with a box that says '42" LCD TV' on the outside, duty is about 40% of perceived value. Try and get a duplicate receipt, at least you'll be able to argue that it's used and get a discount.

If you do bring it, make sure you bring some SCART to RCA leads. SCART is rare here, we've had many posters looking for cables, although you can find them hen's teeth are more common

Can you still do this? I thought they'd pretty well killed off any duty free import apart from returning Thai nationals.
