พรรคมัชฌิมา

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the official English language version of political party with the name "พรรคมัชฌิมาธิปไตย"? It appears to come from the word "moderate" as this from Lexitron:

"มัชฌิมา [ADJ] moderate; middle Syn. ปานกลาง, มัชฌิม Sample:เวลาจะทำอะไร เราควรยึดหลักมัชฌิมาเอาไว้" Sample: "Whenever we do anything, we should do it in moderation."

Therefore, the name seems to be some variant of "Rule of Moderation". And, is the name intended to invoke the Buddhist term "มัชฌิมาปฏิปทา [N] middle path; middle way; moderate practice"?

In my opinion, I think you were right about this assumption.

I don't think they've ever attempted to translate their name into English. At least, it's always referred to as "Matchima" in the English-language press. (Perhaps something would be "lost in translation"?) Your own rendering of the meaning sounds pretty good, though. Cheers.

Since มัชฌิมา means middle, couldn't we then translate มัชฌิมาธิปไตย as "mediocracy"? A system of government in which the middle reigns? :o

Rikker: Considering the guys running that party, I'd say: By Jove, I think you've got it! :o
