Air force to get Gripen jet fighters

Cabinet okays B34bn purchase from Sweden

The cabinet yesterday agreed the air force could buy 12 Gripen multi-role fighters from Sweden at a cost of 34.4 billion baht. The procurement plan has been kept low-profile, with air force chief ACM Chalit Phukphasuk refusing to comment.

Government spokesman Chiya Yimwilai said details would be announced by ACM Chalit today.

The new Gripen-JAS 39C/D aircraft will replace the air force's ageing American-made F-5E fighters.

It is the second major arms procurement approved by the cabinet recently. On Sept 25 it endorsed the Defence Ministry's 7.7-billion-baht plan to buy 96 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from Ukraine and 15,000 TAR-21 assault rifles from Israel for the army, C-802 surface-to-surface missiles and launch systems for the navy from China, and new avionics for the six C-130H aircraft operated by the air force.

For clarification, the project to purchase new fighters to counter the new military hardware for example Malaysia has purchases was started some 2 years ago and not something that was initiated with the coup.

So after the army got their new tanks, now the air force will get the new jets, we're waiting what the navy is up to? Hopefully not another wasteful aircraft carrier :D:o

How about some submarines?

Off the cuff; do they still not allow non-Thais to walk aboard the floating barnacle-magnet still moored at Sattahip?

This blog (Thailand Jumped the Shark) has done a very good work, about this story.

You should read it. It's... tasty.

The word "corruption" has no limit...

Interesting implications, but then again arms dealing is not exactly an honourable profession even at the best of times.

Read recently about a scandal involving South Korea and a US fighter jet purchase...so you don't really have to be a junta to take some tea money here and there. :o

In the air show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0LBj_8xs_w

As you can see, this was a great deal for Sweden...

The Gripen is a great fighter, what do you have against it? Air-show crashes are very common, even with Sukhoi planes...or are those crap in your view as well? :o

Sukhoi crash during the air show in Ukraine occured because of the pilot's error. However, both of those JAS Gripen crashes occured because of the error in the plane.

According to what I've been reading, it's not actually clear (at least publicly) that the Gripen crashes up to this date have been 100% plane errors...just out of curiosity I Googled for F/A-18 crashes and came across quite a bunch, what plane do you think would have been a better deal for the Thai air force?

zink>> Please show us an airplane that is in active service that hasn't crashed during development or service.

And just for laughs, how about you make sure it's of generation 4, 4.5 or 5.

I would be curious to see how many crashes per flight hour these plans have. Saying that the F/A-18 has more crashes than the Gripen can probably be accounted for the greater number of planes produced, more hours flown, and actually using the plane in combat.

Good to play it safe, they can blame the 'Farang Engineering' whenever they drive one into a hanger.

It is not clear that the swedes will sell the plane to Thailand due to the fact that there are same policies in Sweden as in US; it is not PC to sell weapons to a junta.

As for the qualities of the plane: it is indeed a very good plane. Infact it is one of the best airfighters out there. But it is not as good as Eurofighter or the F-22. JAS gripen is a multitask aircarft that can both cope with hunting ,attack and surveillance i.e good at many things not just best in one thing. The aim is to replace the ageing fleet of F 16A and F-5 planes.

As for the crashes: in itself the JAS Gripen is extremly instable. It relies on computers when it comes to handling. In this case the computers are used to manipulate the the center of gravity of the craft. In earlier series there have been problem with the software...To make it more grafic; it is like you have a computer who helps you to reverse you car with trailer in over 100 mph. Suddenly the computer shuts down :o ...

There have been 3 crashes with the airplane in service, 2 has been pilot error/early jumpouts, 1 is pending investigation.

I think this really applies to all modern fighters.

I wonder if they get the "blue screen of death" just before they crash :D

are those computers better than the ones that came with the invision scanners i.e. would they hang if used for watching porn... :o
