Ubon - Nevada Grand Hotel (changed Name)

Its official the Nevada grand hotel in Ubon has changed name to the Ubon International. Not sure if this just means they've had an overhaul or new ownership but something is happening around there...

This place also has a Starbucks coffee house next door and alot of money seems to be spent around the hotel complex.

Speaking of Ubon hotels, what's happened to the Pratumrat over there on the sort of east side of town?

It was about brand new in 1975, just in time for when the U.S. Air Force departed Ubon, along with lots of potential customers.  I/we of the U.S. "refugee" office did provide them with a lot of business when the Ubon camp for Lao refugees was open  about 1977-'80.  I last visited the place for breakfast (ugh!) in 1999 while up there spectating at the World Team skydiving event.  It'd sure fallen on hard times.

Was quite OK 20 years earlier, sad....

The Nevada Complex is owned by 2 brothers.

One ownes The Nevada Grand Hotel, with the Rock, the Zodiac, and everything north of the road going in/out.

The other brother ownes The Nevada Inn Hotel, the cineplex, the Plaza with Starbucks, and soon to come Chesters Grill, and others places on the south side!

Some times they cooperate, and some times not!

I have a friend running the Nevada Grand Travel, but haven't heard obout the name change.

I stayed there on Friday, I like the place, and can recommend it to others!

Hey Mac - The Pratumrat had a nice facelift in 2003 - lobby was totally changed. Didn't see the rooms after my stay there in 1999 (they were just adequate then) but the nightclub was pretty good while I lived in Ubon (1999 - 2003). But you're right about the breakfast there: was still about as nice as what you could get on the overnight train from BKK! Curious about the Lao camp; there's a rather large Lao community in Albuquerque that dates to the mid 70's. There's also a big Air Force presence here. Can you give me any background on the connection? I mean there are lots of air bases in the US; how did it happen that so many got resettled in ABQ? Do you know of any published history of the resettlement program? I remember when all you guys showed up in Ubon for the World Team skydiving event; more than made the papers! I always wished there were some way to access the stories of you guys who were in Ubon during that era. Seemed to me from my vantage point at the turn of the millenium that there ought to have been some of you left somewhere around the Changwat but I never found a one, and I did poke around pretty good.

the name may have changed but thats probably about all, i would very shocked if there was any kind of renovations. its a shame because the nevada has the potential to be a decent hotel but in sometimes typical thai fashion they seem content to just let it age. i've stayed there many times since 2001 but i may give the laithong a try next time.

as for the pathurat - dont do it! had a quick look there this time last year, horrible place, overpriced rooms, dodgy mafiaoso-looking blokes hanging around in the corridors(go ahead and call me judgemental if you wish but i speaketh the truth..)

I haven't tried it, but there is a place near the Tan Sri Muang (park with the candle) called Ratchathani Hotel, looks a bit like a boutique hotel, small but modern looking. Anyone tried it?

Full marks for the Ratchathani Hotel. It is a bit of a boutique hotel, at least for Ubon. The restaurant is good too. The Laithong might be more fun but the Ratchathani is not to be missed, especially at Loy Krathong.

You can add the Krung Tong to the list of budget hotels. Its about the same cost as the Montana (450 baht a night) but all newly renovated bathrooms.
