Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (99%) --- where on earth did that come from; parents were very ethnically east european background/ politically active, left wing, new york jewish...very not christian, very quaker high school (community action, daily meditation etc, bla bla bla);

Unitarian Universalism (100%)-- i think this is the jreligion where you tend to more or less believe in some sort of divine something that may or may not be watching over you, but to whom you pray when taking a curve in a dangerous road too quickly kind of like being on the safe side;

on the other hand i really believe that every step i choose affects me and is my responsibility, and not some being looking down on me to see if i've done right or wrong and as the quakers say: a way will open (very optimistic people, quakers) when the going gets rough.\

Well, whatever it is, I'm it to a T. I always thought I was an athiest, but I guess I was wrong I'm only 68% Nonthiest, strangely. I don't know about the Unitarianism, the discription is really not me. Theravada Buddhism is actually a lot closer. Many of the descriptions were pretty accurate. Strangely, the Secular Humanists are even more accurate. Dear Lord- I guess that means I'm a really Roman Catholic!

i think in the quiz they did not ask about Jesus, et al.... which if they had asked if we believe in the father son et al and we had answered no, that would have ruled out alot of the christian religions right there;

Yeah, for some reason that unitarian universalism keeps popping up there. It hardly describes me but it popped up at number 1 for me. I'm basically 99% a scientific atheist with a bit of Hindu-philosophy type spiritualism in the background.

I suppose belief.net assumes that atheist is a subcategory of nontheist, just as they apparently assume Episcopalian/Anglican is a subset of Protestant.

Isn't there a massive assumption here that religion is primarily to do with belief? It seems to me that other factors of experience are far more important in defining one's religion.

The focus upon belief and, to a lesser extent, faith, in defining religion is based upon the Western, mostly Protestant Christian, studies and explanations of religion.

To be religious is to have a belief or a set of beliefs. This may be extremely misleading.

had my 16 year old do the quiz: she came out unsurprisingly enough as a hybrid neo pagan, and unitarian universalist or whatever; she couldnt understand what the father the son and et al were, she's surrounded by various and sundry sects fo jews and atheistic jews and doesnt know many christians, a few non practicing moslems and thai workers.... shocking to find that my kids are the reverse of many americans i dealt with in iowa (what, youre jewish, where are your horns); they find it hard to understand the christian thing...will now check out my much more emphatically jewish son...

i think the whole quiz is geared toward western mind sets; the quiz assumes that you are familiar with christian religions or with the aspects of christian religions... my daughter was really puzzled by some of the questions... i had to explain and give examples of what to me were obvious things.

an other quaker quote from my high school days:

let your lives speak.... (was printed over the door to every building.) meaning, put action to words in social pro active ways, community service, etc.

and my son came out as a good reform jew with a bit of quaker thrown in for good measure; mostly the quiz exposed my kids to new faiths, beliefs, religiouns etc, with the help of a dictionary.

any of you get your thai wife/husband , child whatever to take the quiz and see puzzled reactions like i got from my kids?

I think "atheist" doesn't come up because it isn't specific enough.

For example, I don't belive in God, but I believe that humans should be kind to each other nonetheless. That makes me a "secular humanist", according to the quiz.
