Medical Preparations For First Time Visit?

Featured Replies

My son, his wife and his two sons aged 7 and 9 will be visiting us in March and staying for three weeks.

Our plans include only Bangkok, Pattaya and Khon Kaen.

My son asks me if they need to take and precautionary medicines before coming over,

in particular malaria tablets and cholera and typhoid injections.

Has anybody any idea of what they should do please?

All four are fit and well and take no other medicine and will be coming here from Scotland.

Thanks in advance,

No specific precautions advised for these areas. Just take usual precautions with regards to food.

I had hoped as much. I've lived here 7 years now without any problem but after that time I'm probably immune to local bugs.

In reply to your second sentence then I've got to stop them eating deep-fried Isaan insects/grubs/scorpions/silk-worms then? (joke....honest)

Thanks for your reply.

If not planning a long jungle stay....skip the medications.

I made the mistake of getting malaria medication on my first visit to Thailand.....the pills make you feel horrible.

I did get the usual vaccinations for travel as well....they were offered at low cost by the city where I lived...so why not.....But most "specialists" in the U.S. charge an arm and a leg....call your city or town hall to see about low cost government alternatives.......Don't know about Scotland.....I'm sure the cost is better than the U.S......probably free.

If they contact gp surgery there should be some information about travel health or the practice nurse will advise about any jabs they may need, polio, tetanus should be up to date, kids should be ok with these but adults need to check, also I think hepatitis and something else recommended. No anti malaria meds, they really do make you feel terrible, just lots of mossie repellent(or midgies!) and being careful about bites is best.
